In Japan, the width of an apartment is expressed as the number of tatami mats that make up the room (for example, "6 jou"), or in "tsubo" (Japanese measuring unit for floor space).
Tatami size varies according to region. "Kyou-ma", the tatami used in the Kansai area is larger than "Kanto-ma", which is used in the Kanto region.
When expressing the floor space size for rooms in advertisements, it is a rule of thumb in the Japanese real estate industry to use the conversion rate of one tatami mat size "1 Jo" being equivalent to 1.62 meters squared. (Meter squared in Japanese is called "Hei-Bei.")
One tsubo is 3.3 meters squared. |
