As you may already know, earthquakes are very common in Japan. In fact, it is said that 15% of all the world's earthquakes happen in and around Japan. For this reason, people living in Japan, starting as early as nursery school and elementary school, practice earthquake drills quite regularly.
In January, 1995, over 6000 people died in the Great Hanshin Earthquake (mainly affecting the city of Kobe). Soon after, drastic revisions were made to the laws regarding the construction of buildings. So, anything built after 1995 is believed to be strong and sturdy in the event of an earthquake. |
