The Basics

Money You Would Need to Rent a Room

At Transborders, we work to introduce rooms that are as comfortable and as burden-free to students as possible.

In most cases, when renting an apartment in Japan you will be asked to pay:

  1. One month rent (メYachinモ) in advance
  2. Security deposit ("Shiki-kin") - Usually 1-3 months worth of rent
  3. Key money ("Rei-kin") - Same amount as your security deposit
  4. Commission fee to the real estate agent

It can cost up to 6 times the amount of your monthly rent to move into an apartment. This money is paid when you are signing the contract, before you move in.

Transborders is working hard to minimize as much as possible the amount of initial money that you would have to pay to move into your new home.
