Rei-Kin differs from Shiki-Kin (deposit money) in that you don’t receive it back when you move out.
**Interesting Fact**
The system of paying key money was put into practice after so many houses and buildings were destroyed in World War II.

People showed their appreciation to the landlord by offering a small gift of money.
This has remained a custom in Japan and remains even now.
