How I Found rooms in Japan (Interviews with Students)

Sam's Profile Sam's Profile

TB -- Hi Sam. Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you are doing in Tokyo?

Sam -- Hi. I am a Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science Postdoctoral Fellow, doing research into String Theory and Quantum Field Theory in the high energy physics group at the University of Tokyo, Komaba Campus.

TB -- How did you find out about Transborders?

Sam --  I found out about Transborders through JISTEC (Japan International Science and Technology Exchange Center), which is the organization that is funding my research at the University of Tokyo. I had done a lot of research about rooms and looked on my own, but after being turned down by one too many real estate agencies without any real reason for why my application wasn’t accepted, I decided to try out Transborders services.

TB -- And what was your experience like with Transborders?

Sam -- Well, I think I sent an inquiry, heard back from them within an hour, then saw two rooms that same day. I had been looking already, so I knew both of the buildings they were going to show me, and actually even almost saw a room in a building I had already been rejected from. Though I still kind of was hoping to be able to move into one of the rooms I had already looked at, I decided on a different room after seeing the building and meeting the landlord.

TB -- Wow, I can’t believe that you were turned down and given no reason. And you speak great Japanese, so they can’t really use that as an excuse…well, I am glad that you were able to find a comfortable room.

Sam -- Yeah, the apartment I decided on is really close to my school and it is a really new building, so I am quite happy with it. I really like the landlord, he helped me out a lot when my internet was being installed into the room. I am definitely happy with where I am.

TB -- I’m really happy to hear that! So, all in all, what is your impression of Transborders? And do you have any advice or recommendations for people who are planning to move to Tokyo?

Sam -- Transborders is a great service for any foreigner that is thinking of getting a real apartment for their time in Japan.  Although you'll learn a lot more about Japanese customs by trying to go it yourself, Transborders will make things a lot easier for you.
